The Region III-Division II Men's and Women's Basketball champions will be crowned this weekend with a quartet of semifinals scheduled for Saturday followed by the championship games on Sunday. All games this weekend are being hosted by Monroe Community College, the top seed in both the men's tournament and the women's tournament. The women's semifinals are set for noon and 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon followed by the men's semifinals at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Sunday's championships will start with the women tipping off at noon and the men following at 2:30 pm. Saturday's first women's semifinal features top seeded Monroe CC and fifth seeded Mercyhurst University - North East. Monroe earned the top seed with a perfect 15-0 regular season conference record while Mercyhurst advanced the semifinal with a first round win over Erie Community College 76-62 earlier this week. The second women's semifinal will be the fourth meeting between Jamestown Community College and Niagara County Community College this season. JCC won two of the three regular season matchups between the schools as the home team emerged the victor in each contest earlier this season.
The men's tournament continues Saturday afternoon following a pair of quarterfinal matchups on Friday night. Top seed Monroe Community College will take on Niagara County Community College in the first semifinal with second seed Erie Community College facing Genesee Community College in the fourth game of the day. Monroe earned the top seed with a 13-2 regular season conference record while Niagara CCC comes into Saturday's semifinal after an opening round 98-94 victory of Community College of Rhode Island. Niagara won two of the three regular season games with Monroe as they handed the Tribune's their only two conference losses this season. Erie earned a bye into the semifinal with the second seed while Genesee CC advanced to the semifinals with a 71-59 win over Mercyhurst NE in Friday's quarterfinal led by sophomore Rahmel Thompson with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Erie CC won two of the three meetings between the two programs during the conference season.
