Region III - Division III Men's Basketball Tournament Field Set
The tournament field has been set as regular season competition has come to a close for the 2016-17 Region 3, Division 3 men's basketball season. The 2017 tournament features five teams from the Mountain Valley Conference and three from the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Quarterfinal action is set for Tuesday, February 28th with the semifinals and finals to follow Saturday and Sunday.
The top seed has been awarded to Onondaga Community College who finished the regular season with a regional record of 18-3. The Lazers will host the Vkings of Hudson Valley CC who were awarded the eight seed after finishing the regular season at 14-9. The Lazers defeated the Viking in their only matchup this season in early December. The second matchup in OCC's half of the draw features the #4 seeded Red Barons of Corning CC (17-4) and the #5 seeded Lakers from Finger Lakes CC (15-6). The two teams will meet for the second time in five days after meeting in the semfinals of the MSAC Tournament, a 53-52 win by Finger Lakes.
Herkimer College earns the tournament's second seed after finishing the regular season 20-3 against Region 3 competition. The Generals will take on fellow conference foe North Country Community College. The Saints earned the seventh seed with a 15-8 regional record. Herkimer most recently defeated North Country in the teams' final regular season action. Mohawk Valley Community College is the third seed with an 18-5 regular season record; the Hawks will take on Fulton-Montgomery Community College who finished the season at 15-8. The teams split the season series each winning on their home court.
