Male Athletes of the Week

 

Ryan Boutelle

Sport:  Baseball

College:  Monroe Community College

Hometown:  Gowanda, NY

Boutelle helped lead the Tribunes to the Region III, Division III Championship this week with a series sweeep over visiting Mercyhurst University - North East.  In the opener on Friday Ryan was 2 for 4 at the plate including a homerun in an 11-6 win over the Saints.  In the best of three series clincher on Saturday Boutelle was 3 for 5 with four RBI including his second homerun of the weekend.  He was named tournament most valuable player for his efforts.

 

Pat Van Bortle

Sport:  Lacrosse

College:  Genesee Community College

Hometown:  Fairport, NY

Van Bortle led the GCC men's lacrosse team their first national championship in program history this weekend with upsets of the top two nationally ranked team in the NJCAA.  The Cougars reach the national championship game in thrilling fashion scoring the game winning goal against top seeded Nassau Community College will five seconds remaining for an 8-7 win in the semifinals.  Van Bortle was key in the team's come from behind victory over Onondaga CC.  Trailing 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter Pat started the scoring as Genesee would go on a 3-0 run to take the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest.  After OCC responded with a pair of goals Van Bortle would score the final goal in regulation to tie the game at 12-12 with just under four minutes remaining.  Pat would then score the game winner in the second minute of overtime to lead the team to the championship.

 

 

Female Athletes of the Week

Taylor Daniels

Sport:  Softball

College:  Herkimer College

Hometown:  Watervliet, NY

Taylor helped lead the Generals to their fifth consecutive Region III championship with a sweep of Monroe Community College 9-1, 6-0 on Friday.  Daniels was 2 for 3 in the series opener including a triple a run scored, and three runs batted in.  She collected another three RBI's in the series clincher as she went 1 for 3 with a pair of runs scored.  Daniels was named the Most Valuable Player of the Region IIIA Championships Series

 

 

Christie Hahn

Sport:  Lacrosse

College:  Monroe Community College

Hometown:  North Syracuse, NY

Hahn helped lead MCC to its fourth straight NJCAA title in women's lacrosse this weekend with a win over Harford Community College in the national semi-finals and Onondaga Community College in the finals as she earned tournament most valuable player honors.  Christie sparked the Tribune offense in the semifinal scoring twice in the first five minutes to help her team to an early 3-0 lead en route to an 18-6 victory.  She would add two assists and four ground balls in the opening game of the tournament.  After a scoreless first half in the national championship game, Hahn made her pressence know with a pair of assists and a goal in the midst of a 5-0 run to help her team extend a three goal halftime lead to 8 goals with just under 16 minutes remaining.  MCC would go on to take the championship 14-7.

 

Morgan Nichols

Sport:  Softball

College:  Onondaga Community College

Hometown:  Syracuse, NY

Morgan helped lead the Lazers to the Region IIIB Championship with both her arm and her bat this weekend.  She opened the series with a complete game 3-1 win over Corning Community College.  She struck out 8 batters in the opener allowing just the one earned run.  She drove in one of OCC three runs with an RBI double.  She clinched the series for OCC in the circle with another complete game victory.  She held the Red Barons to four runs in a 9-4 win and drove in two runs on three hits in the finale.  She was named Region IIIB Most Valuable Player for her efforts.
